The End of
the world is coming! Don’t you know it? Well, maybe you should pay a little
more attention to the books and moovies and you will see that the apocalypse is
nigh. Hollywood knows it, the
scientists know it, Mister Bush knows it. The buzz is that Jesus Christ is
about to return. In fact he was about to return a millenium ago. But he
probably forgot the date. Then he was supposed to come in 2000...but this time
he is probably late. Anyway, the End is coming. And if it is not by God then it
will be by Asteroïd or because of the climate change. Don’t be a fool and pay
attention to the signs if you want to be saved. Because the evil nature of our
society is about to be revealed. That’s what the millenarists say. It’s written
in the Bible. And I saw it in “The day after Tomorrow”, because almost everyone
die at the End. Besides President Bush warns us all the time of the dangers
that represents “the axis of Eviiiiiiiil”. Just remember September 11! Believe
me, things are already out of our control ! And if you don’t know what I am
talking about, you’d better have a look on my web review so that you can be
ready for the doomsday.
I have
concocted 6 parts for you : you will find a sociological and historical
analysis and after reading it, you will know everything about the apocalyptic
groups and mouvements in the USA too. Books and moovies are also on my red
list. Then you will learn more about the Bush’s messiah complex and the terrific
scenario of abrupt climate change in part five, which is about the impact of
millenarist and apocalyptic thinking on the american policies. “666, number of
the Beast” is the last straw ! And after that, you won’t consider the pope the
same way anymore....
Have you
ever imagined that we are all parts of a divine plan? This Web review is about
apocalypticism and millenarism in the USA. Not about my own convictions. But
you can’t get away from this subject. It is everywhere on TV, magazines and
even –I mean...especially— in the White House. Because the End is “in”.
And because we like playing at frightening ourselves. But ...what if it was not
a game?
La fin du
monde arrive! Ne le savez-vous pas? Eh bien, peut-être devriez-vous faire un
peu plus attention aux livres et aux films, et vous verrez que l’apocalypse est
proche. Hollywood le sait, Les scientifiques le savent, Monsieur Bush le sait.
Le bruit court que Jésus est sur le point de revenir. En fait il était sur le
point de revenir il y a un millénaire de ça.
Mais il a
probablement oublié la date. Ensuite il était supposé venir en 2000. Mais ce
coup ci il est probablement en retard. De toutes façons, la Fin arrive. Et si
ce n’est pas par Dieu, alors ce sera par astéroïde ou à cause du changement
climatique. Ne soyez pas bête et faites donc attention aux signes si vous
voulez être sauvé. Car la nature diabolique de notre société est sur le point
d’être révélée. C’est ce que disent les millénaristes. C’est écrit dans la
Bible. Et je l’ai vu dans « Le jour d’après », parce que pratiquement
tout le monde meurt à la fin. En plus le Président Bush nous avertit tout le
temps des dangers que représente « L’axe du maaaaaaaaal ». Souvenez
vous simplement du 11 septembre ! Croyez moi, les choses sont déjà hors de
notre contrôle ! Et si vous ne savez pas de quoi je suis en train de
parler, vous feriez mieux de jeter un œil sur ma revue Internet afin d’être
prêt pour le jour du jugement dernier.
J’ai concocté

historique, et, après l’avoir lue, vous saurez également tout sur les groupes
et mouvements apocalyptiques aux USA. Des livres et des films sont aussi sur ma
liste rouge. Ensuite, vous en apprendrez d’avantage sur le « complexe du
Messie » de Bush et sur le terrifiant scénario d’un brusque changement
climatique dans la cinquième partie, qui traite de l’impact de la pensée
millénariste et apocalyptique sur les politiques américaines. « 666,
chiffre de la bête » est la cerise sur le gâteau ! Et après tout ça, vous ne considèrerez plus
le pape de la même manière…
Avez-vous
déjà imaginé que nous faisions tous partie d’un plan divin ? Cette revue
Internet tourne autour de l’apocalyptisme et du millénarisme aux USA. Pas
autour de mes propres convictions. Mais personne ne peut échapper à ce sujet.
Il est partout à la TV, dans les magazines, et même –je veux dire... surtout-
à la Maison Blanche. Parce que la fin est « in », c’est à dire à la
mode. Et parce que nous aimons jouer à nous faire peur. Mais…et si ce n’était

SUMMARY
Everyone will find in this document a definition of apocalypticism. According to Wikipedia, it is “a worldview based
on the idea that important matters are hidden from view and they will soon be
revealed in a major confrontation of earth-shaking magnitude that will change
the course of history”. It doesn’t matter if these views are religious or
secular. In both sides we can find people awaiting this positive, negative or
“ambiguous” outcome. This tendency to believe in the “inevitable” End
had --and still have—a big impact on litterature, moovies and political
strategies. Indeed the politicians perfectly know how to take advantage on it
when demonizing and spacegoating their ennemies.

external link called “dances with devil”. It is about how apocalyptic and
millenalist themes influence right wing spacegoating and conspiracism. Indeed
the conspiracist theories are part of the apocalyptic beliefs. And you have
“racism” in the word “conspiracism”... a meer coincidence? Not that simple!

What is the millenarism or millenarianism?
This Internet link gives its own definition. It is defined as “the belief by a
religious, social, or political group or movement in a coming major
transformation of society after which all things will be changed in a positive
(or sometimes negative or ambiguous) direction.” Therefore it is very similiar
to the apocalypticism. Nevertheless the millenarism puts more the stress on the
evil nature of our societies: the millenarian ideologies or religious sects
assert that the current society and its rulers are corrupted and will be
destroyed soon in the batlle to come.
These beliefs drive them to consider the laws et
govenements as unjust which can result either in violence inwards (suicides)
and outwards (terrorist acts) or in withdrawing from society.
Examples of the millenarian groups, movements (and
writings) are also given, such as the branch davidians or the seventh-day
Adventists.

Apocalypse” is one of the numerous themes developped by FRONTLINE. Since 1983,
Frontline has served as American public television's - PBS - flagship public
affairs series. It realises incisive documentaries covering “the scope and
complexity of the human experience.” This site contains valuable information
and gives the viewers much to think
about the subject I am dealing with.

SUMMARY
This document consists in a chronology retracing the apocalyptic world
view from 1500 B.CE --when it appeared for the first time in the Zororoaster
tradition-- up to 1492.
It gives an overview on the apocalypic litterature by detailing series
of books such as the book of Ezekiel, Isaiah, Daniel or the book of Watchers
and “The Little Apocalypse” of Mark (13). It also draws our attention on the
book of revelation of John (the final book of the Bible since the fourth
century) and its tremendous influence
on the western culture and history. They were not written at the same epoch,
nevertheless they all warn us of an inminent end. They motivated millions of
believers by ensuring them they will be saved from their suffering after a sort
of future cosmic battle ...when the
“beast” or “Satan” will be defeated!
This chronology emphasizes the Jesus’ eschatologogical discourse
to his disciples about this new, perfect, future world for humanity. We are
also told the role of the first christians in casting Jesus as a Messiah that
would return soon “to finish his work”, and the persecutions they were the victim of.
It outlines several apocalyptic groups and mouvements too. Among them,
we can notice first the Essene Mouvement (in the mid-to Late first
century). It is described as an apocalyptic Jewish sect looking forward to the
day of judgement. Then the Montanist sect was signaling in 156 A.D the
imminent coming of the God's Kingdom onto Phrygiam soil. The third one was born
with the Joachim of Fiore’s teaching: This monk predicted that the
wondrous Age of the Spirit would begin between 1200 and 1260.
Furthermore, it is very interesting to see how the end
of persecutions, Romes’ falling, the Rise of Islam (with muslims in the role of
the Antichrist...and consequently the first crusades), the end of first
christian millenium, the schism spleating Christianity in two, stories of
earthquakes and other calamities such as the black death...were all interpreted
as the Apocalypse.

Elle retrace également quelques
groupes et mouvements apocalyptiques. Parmi ceux-ci, on peut tout d’abord noter
le mouvement Essenien (du milieu à la fin du premier siècle). Il est décrit
comme une secte apocalyptique en attente du jour du jugement. Ensuite, la
secte Montaniste signalait en 156 de notre ère l’arrivée imminente du
royaume de Dieu sur le sol de Phrygie. Le troisième mouvement naît avec l’enseignement

il est très intéressant de voir comment la fin des persécutions, la chute de
Rome, la montée de l’Islam (avec les musulmans dans le rôle de
l’Antéchrist...et par conséquent les premières croisades), la fin du premier
millénaire chrétien, le schisme séparant e deux la chrétienté, les histoires de
tremblements de terre et autres calamités comme la peste (“la mort
noire”)…furent tous interprétés comme l’Apocalypse !

SUMMARY
The following Internet link is relative to the year
999 and the mass hysteria it was supposed to launch. The author of
this article reviews how the story has been transmitted over the intervening
centuries. He quotes many writters and historians who mentionned this panic and
enriches his review with several short extracts from mediaval chronicles.
Some
annals report that in this year a “terrible comet” appeared in the sky,
which let the people think that the last day was at hand. The year 1001 was
also expected to be the year when the Antichrist should be revealed, and
not long after...the judgment. Indeed it seems that everyone believed that
Jesus Christ was about to descend upon Jerusalem. Therefore in every land of
Europe a panic terror would have made some people forsake their home, looking
for salavation.
However some authors (like Burr) denied it happened,
and demolished evidences for a “panic terror” at the approach of the year 1000.
According to some analysts, none of these events happened, or if they did,
there were exagerated. Consequently we are led to think that all these stories
about the year 1000 and the madness it provoked...are just legends.

tolerance.org is a Web Site realised by the OCRT (which means Ontario
Consultants on Religious Tolerance”) It is an agency that promotes the freedom
of individuals to follow the religious path of their choosing, without
discrimination or oppression. This group want to serve the people of the United
States and Canada in disseminating accurate religious information, exposing
religious fraud, hatred and misinformation and disseminating information on
dozens of “hot” religious topic (such as aborption, homosexuality or the
Occult...). This organisation is very open-minded and provides us with a lot of
reliable information, especially on the topic of millenarism.

SUMMARY
The year 2000 arrived and not much happened even though commun predictions related to
the return of the Christ, the battle of Armageddon or massive natural and
technological disasters had been predicted.
Some anti
cults mouvements had warned the public of the possibility of
religiously-motivated mass suicides, especially in Israël. Indeed the following
documents describes some pre-millenial events which show that Jerusalem could
have turn into a bloody mess, just like in Waco.
In the very secret and sensitive Projet Megiddo
reports, the FBI was worried about the immediate period after the disappointement
and anticipated possibilities of religiously-inspired violence raging
worldwide. It was reported that the mix of apocalyptic beliefs and conspiracy
theories may have led these groups on the increase in the USA (among them white
supremacists organizations, black extremist groups or extreme Christian
fundamentalists) to precipitate the End of the World!
Except in Uganda, where a tragic mass-murder involved the deaths of over 1,000 ex-Roman Catholics
in march 2000, nothing special happened that year! We just learned that knowledge based on experience has won out over
knowledge based on doctrine.
This document also points out that apocalyptic
prophecy had an increasing influence on the North American public as this
millennium approached. Indeed a lot of books and movies about it achieved great
success, such as the Omega Code.

mouvements anti-cultes avaient averti le public de la possibilité de suicides
de masse liés à des motifs religieux, en particulier en Israël. En effet, le document suivant décrit des
évènements précédent le passage au second millénaire, lesquels montrent que
Jérusalem aurait pu tourner au carnage,
tout comme ce fut le cas à Waco.
Dans le très
sensible et secret rapport du Projet Megiddo, le FBI s’inquiétait
de la période immédiate succédant à la déception et anticipait les possibilités
d’une violence d’inspiration religieuse sévissant à travers le monde. On y
rapportait que le mélange des croyances apocalyptiques et des théories de la conspiration
aurait pu conduire ces groupes qui prolifèrent aux USA (parmi lesquels des
organisations pour la suprématie blanche, des groupes extrémistes noirs ou des
extrêmes fondamentalistes chrétiens) à précipiter la Fin du Monde !
Excepté en Ouganda, où un tragique assassinat de masse entraîna la mort de
plus de 1000 ex-catholiques romains en mars 2000, rien de spécial n’arriva
cette année là ! Nous avons juste appris que la connaissance basée sur
l’expérience a supplanté la connaissance basée sur la doctrine.
Ce document montre également que la prophétie apocalyptique a exercé
une influence croissante sur le public nord américain à l’approche de ce
millénaire. En effet, de nombreux ouvrages et films à ce sujet remportèrent un
grand succès, comme par exemple Le Code Omega.

weekly column on various topics related to ethics, values, religion and
society. The articles deal with serious issues but the tone is humoristic and
very satiric. You can’t help smiling when you read it.
The Web page I have chosen is about the End...however it is pretty
funny. It brings a touch of flippancy to this topic.

Il semble que le thème de la
« fin » soit à la mode. Une couverture récente du magazine
« Time » faisait figurer diverses leçons religieuses sur
l’Apocalypse, « Newsweek » suivait avec une couverture posant la
question du pourquoi les gens souhaitaient aller au paradis. Le livre le plus
important de l’année pourrait s’avérer être le dixième épisode de la série
« La gauche derrière », série tirée de la Bible, le livre neuf fut le
roman le plus vendu en 2001.
Puis il y a la peur des
astéroïdes, sans aucun doute le motif des insomnies pour l’habitant
d’Albuquerque. Un astéroïde de la taille d’un terrain de soccer s’est approché
à moins d’un tiers de la distance
terre-lune en juin et qui aurait pu touchait la terre à midi. (Désolé.
Mon poète interne n’est pas là.) En juillet, des astronomes britanniques
prévoyaient qu’un asteroids large de un mile pourrait frapper la terre le 1er
février 2019, évincant tous les dinosaures ayant survécu à la dernière grosse
roche écrasée sur la planète.
La NASA discrédita cette annonce
mais n’a pas pu complètement écarter la possibilité d’un impact le 1er
février 2060. Ceci ne devrait pas être un problème puisque, comme l’affirme un
rapport des Nations Unies publiée avant
le Sommet sur la terre qui se tient aujourd’hui an Afrique du sud, la moitié
d’entre nous manquera d’eau avant cette date de toutes façons. Le reste de la
prédiction ressemble à celle qu’a faite Paul Ehrlich en 1968 dans « La
bombe démographique », le standard dans l’échelle des peurs, qui a promis
que des Américains mourraient de faim dans les rues au milieu des années 70.
L’approche la plus originale
pourrait être celle Journal-Constitution d’Atlanta. Sur une représentation
diffusée à travers tout le pays, le texte se tourne vers plusieurs experts pour
évaluer, selon leur probabilité de réalisation, différentes dates de fin des
temps devant figurer dans des énigmes de films. Je ne suis pas sûr de savoir
comment quelqu’un devient un expert dans la fin des temps, mais ceux choisis
attribuaient des notes à « Soylent Green » et
« Waterworld » .
« Soylent Green » dresse
le portrait d’une planète ravagée par la faim et se termine sur la soudaine apparition
d’un nouvel approvisionnement en nourriture. La source est…et bien, disons
simplement que les lecteurs d’Hannibal approuveront.
Il y a beaucoup de désaccords sur
la vraisemblance d’une pénurie de nourriture mondiale, avec des critiques
citant la tendance du taux des naissances à la baisse et l’efficience agricole
à la hausse alors que les sociétés s’industrialisent. En 1998, le Docteur
Amartya Sen d’Inde a gagné le Prix Nobel en Sciences économiques pour avoir
démontré que la famine ne résultait pas d’un manque mais de systèmes de
distribution inefficients et des complots gouvernementaux qui peuvent les
isoler des effets négatifs de cette pénurie. Il met en avant que c’est la
raison pour laquelle les famines arrivent rarement au sein des démocraties.
La sélection des
« Waterworld » est ironique. Le film montre tout à l’exception d’un
petit bout de terre couvert sous des centaines de mètres d’eau, courtoisie du
réchauffement planétaire. En fait vous pourriez mélanger tous les cubes de
glace de la planète et ne pas faire monter l’océan de plus de quelques pieds.
La seule façon pour qu’un tel sort se réalise est par l’intermédiaire d’une
intervention divine, à la Noah, ce que le Grand Gars a promis de ne plus
recommencer.

Pendant que le débat sur la fin des temps a lieu,
un thème divise la quête pour la connaissance scientifique de la compréhension
religieuse. Au contraire, tous les deux devraient concerner la vérité et
finalement, se terminer au même endroit. Quand ils cherchent autre chose, si la
science devient sensible à l’agenda social ou la religion à la culture
populaire, ils perdent leur crédibilité et leur mission.
En outre, nous allons tous mourir que le monde finisse avec ou sans nous. Peut-être que le peu de temps sera mieux apprécié si nous considérons ce qui vient alors.
I chose to translate this text instead of giving a summary of it. Because it is a kind of editorial and you can’t summarize a leading article, can you? There are too much ideas, and the tone is very specific. The text is about the end of the World’s debate, yes, but...much more than that. It is ironic, it is impertinent and relevant. SUMMARY
1- Paul Boyer is a professor of History in the Wisconsin. He tells us about the emergence of groups in our contemporary world which condemn the american society and compare it to the Evil. He evoks the role and influence of a charismatic leader in these marginal mouvements. We are informed that we must not reduce the apocalyptic beliefs to the doomsday Cult, which are just one subset of a vaster group of Americans who take apocalyptic beliefs very seriously. Otherwise, Paul Boyer explains that when these groups cut themselves from the world, they do it according to the Christian tradition. Indeed this ancestral tradition encouraged the believers since the beginning to whithdraw from society to prove they were true believers.
2- James Tabor
is a professor in the department of Religious Studies at the University of
North Carolina. He answers a few questions about David’s Koresh’s story and the
Branch Davidians. David Koresh (whose real name was Vernon Howell) had
already had mystic esperiences in Jerusalem and Israël in the 1980’s when he
returned to the United States to join the davidians. David had a litteral way of reading the Book of Revelation and
identify himself with a figure that appears in Revelation 10. Some people said
he thought he was an incarnation of Jesus. Actually in 1985 he was convinced
that he was the final and seventh messager. David pretended he had
understood all the mysteries of the Bible and thought he was chosen to bring
the final revelation. According to James Tabor, David didn’t expect the Events
of Waco because it didn’t fit any prophecies of the Bible that he had
expounded and because he thought that his mission would make him go back to
Jerusalem with his followers. But the FBI used tanks to attack with a
lot of noise and light at night, pressing the group. Then Koresh started to think it was maybe the End of the World!
In conclusion, James Tabor whish the government didn’t tigger this ill-fated
situation.

What struck me most while reading this article is first the wonderful plasticity of the apocalyptic discourse allowing interpreters to read the symbols and images as they wish.
And
secondly: the United States has long
regarded itself as a beacon of human rights, as evidenced by an enlightened
constitution, judicial independence, and a civil society grounded in strong
traditions of free speech and press freedom. But the reality is more complex;
for decades, civil rights and civil liberties groups have exposed
constitutional violations and challenged abusive policies and practices. The
Waco disasters shows it. And even in recent years, as well, international human
rights monitors have documented serious gaps in U.S. protections of the human
rights of vulnerable groups.

Coming out of the apocalyptic political climate in England in the mid-17th
century, the Puritans group is a specific and interesting one in the
apocalyptic history. After wishing they could bring back the true kingdom of
Christ, they see today the possibility of creating the millennial kingdom, the
vision of a truly righteous nation. This conception of nation had, according to
them, been perverted by the Catholic Church and by the English Reformation.
It’s in New England (USA) that this vision could be realized.
There are two strands of apocalypticism: the vision of the New Jerusalem
and the darker vision of a time of destruction coming.
Why the USA? There was a vision of America having a redemptive role in
history. The theme of a New Jerusalem “city on a hill” became a part of
American civil religion and it’s still the case today! The idea of the nation
as “the city set on the hill” became important, both in the rhetoric of the
American Revolution and also in the defining of a new sense of national
identity.
Arrived on the shores of New England, the Puritans, persecuted, at the
edge of civilization, viewed themselves as a shining example of the world and
wanted to define a holy commonwealth.
The idea of the Great Awakening (mid-18th century) is a
return to the original impulses that founded the Puritan colony. Among them:
the creation of the theocracy of God.

Puritain est un groupe spécifique et intéressant dans l’histoire apocalyptique.
Après avoir souhaité pouvoir ramener le véritable royaume du Christ, ils voient
aujourd’hui la possibilité de créer le royaume millénaire, la vision d’une
véritable nation vertueuse. Cette conception de la nation avait été, selon eux,
pervertie par l’Eglise Catholique et par la réforme anglaise. C’est en Nouvelle
Angleterre (USA) que cette vision pourrait être réalisée.

l’apocalyptisme: la vision de la Nouvelle Jérusalem, et celle, plus sombre,
d’un temps de destruction à venir.
Pourquoi les USA? Il y avait une
vision de l’Amérique détenant un rôle de rédemption dans l’histoire. Le thème
de la Nouvelle Jérusalem « Cité sur une colline » est devenue partie
prenant de la religion civile américaine et cela est toujours le cas !
L’idée de la nation comme « la cité posée sur la colline » est
devenue importante, à la fois dans la rhétorique de la révolution américaine et
également dans la définition d’un nouveau sens de l’identité nationale.
Arrivés sur les rivages de la
Nouvelle Angleterre, les Puritains, persécutés, à l’écart de toute
civilisation, se voyaient comme un brillant exemple du monde et voulaient
définir une communauté, un Etat saints. L’idée du grand réveil (milieu 18ème)
est un retour aux impulsions initiales qui fondèrent la colonie puritaine.
Parmi celles-ci : la création d’une théocratie de Dieu.

ideologies or religious sects often appear in oppressed peoples. Just like the

SUMMARY
The End of the World As We Know It: Faith, Fatalism, and
Apocalypse in America is the title of a novel by By Daniel Wojcik. The
following article is a description of this book dealing with the american apocalyptic
expectations at the threshold of the new millennium. This article made me
want to read the novel (which is said to said to be “slendid and significant”)
and should also draw your attention on it.
Apocalyptic movements have always florished in America
thanks to people’s ancestral fears about the so-called End of the World. But
the author of The End of The World (...) makes the difference between
the very virulent groups of the decades preceding the Civil War (like
Millerism, Fourierism, and the Shakers) and the mouvements pospering nowadays.
Indeed not only these mouvements use the media as a tool to spread their
messages, but those messages come from conventional religious forms as
well as secular or synchretic shapes too (New Religious Movements
and occultists belonging to that last group). Daniel Wojcik details all these
belief systems in the contemporary America, and, according to the journalist,
he does it with lucidity and preciseness. For instance, his book is a
descriptive --and critical-- work of the Catholic apocalypticism linked to
Marian apparitions, the secular explanations associated with scenarios of
nuclear war and the increasingly frequent apocalyptic references to the Aliens.
He draws our attention on the link
between the literature of apocalypse and its manifestations in popular
culture and folklore. Fatalism (when you think that tomorrow is
meaningfull and the final Battle can’t be postponned or cancel) is an important
issue the author also raises.
In
conclusion, the journalist who read this book regrets that the theme of
fatalism was perhaps too much highlighted whereas paradoxically believers in a
coming apocalypse believe also they can
slow, speed up, or deflect the End! However, he loved the book and judge
it very positively.
La Fin du
Monde Telle Que Nous La Connaissons: Foi, Fatalisme, et Apocalypse en Amérique est le
titre d’un roman de Daniel Wojcik. L’article qui suit est une description de ce
livre qui traite des attentes apocalyptiques américaines lors du passage
au nouveau millénaire. Cet article m’a donné envie de lire le roman (que l’on

Il attire notre attention sur le lien qui existe entre la littérature de

l’auteur soulève également.
En
conclusion, le journaliste qui a lu cet ouvrage regrette que le thème du
fatalisme ait peut être été trop mis en lumière alors que, paradoxalement, les
croyants en l’Apocalypse à venir croient également qu’ils peuvent ralentir,
accélérer ou contourner la Fin. Cependant, il a adoré le livre et le juge très
positivement.

The goal of this Web Site is to bring more interactivity and interaction

passion for Stephen King’s books. Nevertheless, his point of view should be
particulary relevant for our subject. However very subjective, it is a good way
to present this novel I am totally fond of too!

SUMMARY
After a government-spawned "superflu" wipes out more than 90
percent of the earth's population, the devastated survivors must decide whether
to support or resist the advances of a mysterious stranger from way down South
who wishes to claim this new world order for himself. “The stands” sets up a final conflict (a very epic
battle) between good and evil. Then a new
world borns in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides -- or are
chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old
Mother Abigail -- and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a
lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the dark man. That’s it for
the summary.
With
such a programm, Ian Hocking is forced to admit that this science fiction novel
is probably the greatest book King has ever written! He speaks of romance,
action, drama...and concludes that this novel is not a superficial one. Stephen
King based his work on the Judeo-Christian concept of Armageddon. But Hocking
also puts the stress on these scandinavian legends in which an epic final
battle of good against Evil took place at some distant time...
.

population mondiale, les survivants dévastés doivent décider s’ils supportent
ou luttent contre les avances d’un mystérieux étranger du Sud qui souhaite
proclamer ce nouvel ordre mondial pour lui même. « The stands » (=
les résistants) pose un conflit final (une bataille très épique !) entre
le bien et le mal. Ensuite un nouveau monde naît dans lequel une poignée de
survivants paniqués choisissent leur camp—ou sont choisis. Un monde dans lequel
le bien repose sur les frêles épaules de Mère Abigail (108 ans !) – et les
pires des cauchemars du mal sont symbolisés par un homme au sourire létal et
aux pouvoirs innommables : Randall Flagg, l’homme sombre. C’est tout pour
le résumé.
Avec un tel programme, Ina Hocking
est bien forcé d’admettre que ce roman de science fiction est probablement le
meilleur livre que King ait jamais écrit ! Il parle de romance, d’action,
de drame…et conclut que le roman n’est pas superficiel. Stephen King a basé son
travail sur le concept judéo-chrétien d’Armageddon. Mais Hocking met également
l’accent sur ces légendes scandinaves dans lesquelles une épique bataille
finale du bien contre le mal se tenait en des temps lointains…
COMMENTARY
The Stands offers a great suspense and it is a very
exciting read. Personnaly, I found the book good. “A meaty and plot-heavy
read”, as Hocking says. But I think that “the Stand” had also a very
unsatisfying ending. Too bad! By the way, did you know that a moovie was also
made of it?
Don’t you remember “The Antrax panic”? The fowl pest
with asiastic chickens? Even the Aids could be in the package. And what if this
book was premonitory? What if “the King” was a prophet ;-)

SUMMARY
The Day After Tomorrow by Roland Emmerich is a disaster film shot last year. It is a very impressive moovie about the effects of global warming and the coming of a new Ice Age. The scientific community critized it a lot, arguing that it was only pure science fiction and it has no chance to happen soon! However, the authors of this article seem to have the feeling that “it will end up being a work of non-fiction”! Would Holliwood know something that we don’t?
Le jour d’Après de Roland Emmerich est un film-catastrophe tourné l’année dernière. Il
s’agit d’un film très impressionnant sur les effets du réchauffement global
et de l’arrivée d’un nouvel Age de Glace. La communauté scientifique l’a
beaucoup critiqué, argumentant qu’il s’agissait là seulement de pure science
fiction et qu’il n’y a aucune chance pour que cet événement se produise
bientôt ! Pourtant, les auteurs de cet article ont le sentiment que
« cela finira par devenir un travail de non-fiction ». Hollywood
saurait-il quelque chose que nous ne savons pas ?

« The day after Tomorrow » is a very exciting moovie, especially because the fiction seems to join the reality. “It was probably exagerated” we think secretly to feel reassured. But if you read the report in section five of this Web review, you may find reasons to be affraid!

SUMMARY
Deep impact is a moovie by Mimi Leder and it was realized in 1998 in the same year as Armageddon. This is the story of the terrible panic preceding the impact of an asteroïd on the United States. This short critique is extremely satyric and ironic: there would be no emotion (or a fake emotion), the story would be bloody stupid, it would be a tall action, and despite its “absurdity”, the film would take itself seriously, which is the limit! Maybe a little bit impartial towards it, isn’t?
Deep Impact est un film de Mimi Leder et il a été réalisé en 1998, c’est à dire la
même année qu’Armaggedon. Il s’agit de l’histoire de la terrible panique
précédent l’impact d’un astéroïde sur les Etats Unis. Cette courte
critique est extrêmement satyrique et ironique : il n’y aurait aucune
émotion (ou une fausse émotion), l’histoire serait terriblement stupide,
l’action y serait invraisemblable, et, en dépit de son « absurdité »,
le film se prendrait au sérieux, ce qui est la cerise sur le gateau ! Peut
être un peu impartial, non ?

it interesting to see how the moovie makers manage to be suitable with any

1- BUSH’S MESSIAH COMPLEX

The following
article was published in The Progressive magazine, in February 2003. Third
World Traveler has put it on line on a site dedicated to magazine, article
and books offering “an alternative view” about the state of democracy in
America and about “the impact of the policies of the United States' government,
transnational corporations, international trade and financial institutions, and
the corporate media,
on war and peace, democracy, free speech, social and economic justice, and
human rights,in the Third World, and in the United States.”
This site is clearly in the anti-Bush side (and even in the anti US side) and it places G.W Bush on the same footing as Agusto Pinochet. It denounces propaganda, disinformation, the glorification of war, power, and the military legions...So as you can see it is not very partial.
During the George W. Bush Administration, The Progressive also focused on his messianic militarism, his mendacious war against Iraq and the assault that he and John Ashcroft have leveled against the civil liberties.
Therefore, you shouldn’t expect from these sources to be totally neutral. However, they present an interesting and critical point of view that I chose to show you ! Have fun!

SUMMARY
This article deals with the Bush’s messianic rhetoric for political purposes. The journalist calls it “messianic militarism”.
Indeed Bush is depicted as a President who feels divinely inspired. His main reference is the Bible, he is always ready to bandy about the name of God, and in this way he is not the first President to do so. But the journalist points out that his religious beliefs spill probably to much over into his job. His fervor (or his so-c alled fervor) is (or seems to be) so strong that it has a very big influence on his political decisions. He is convinced that he was chosen according to a divine plan and after September 11 he believed he was realizing these God’ plans by waging war. And his “mission” was to make the world safer! By some aspects he consideres himself as a lord in medieval times, using denominations such as “axis of Evil” to qualify Irak as well as North Korea. Besides he declared openly that the United States went on a crusade. The journalist also denounces his flippancy about war: Bush shouldn’t joke about serious issues, because the war is not to be triffled with.
So what is the diagnosis? Bush is into the apocalyptic and messianic thinking of militant Christian evangelicals, and if you add the militarism Zeal, it may become very dangerous for the democracy!

En effet, Bush est dépeint comme un Président qui
se sent inspiré par Dieu. Sa principale référence est la Bible, il est toujours
prêt à bavarder sur le nom de Dieu, et en ce sens il n’est pas le
premier Président à le faire. Mais le journalistes montre que ses croyances
religieuses débordent probablement trop sur son travail. Sa ferveur (ou sa
prétendue ferveur) est (ou semble être) si forte qu’elle exerce une très grosse
influence sur ses décisions politiques. Il est convaincu qu’il a été choisi
selon un plan divin et après le 11 septembre il croyait qu’il était en
train de réaliser ces plans divins en faisant la guerre. Et sa « mission » consistait à
rendre le monde plus sûr. Par certains aspects, il se considère comme un
seigneur dans des temps médiévaux, usant des dénominations comme « l’axe
du mal » pour qualifier aussi bien l’Irak que la Corée du Nord. De
plus, il a déclaré ouvertement que les Etats Unis étaient en croisade. Le
journaliste dénonce également sa légèreté, son inconséquence au sujet de la
guerre. Bush ne devrait pas faire de plaisanterie sur les questions sérieuses,
car la guerre n’est pas une chose dont on peut plaisanter.
Quel est donc le diagnostic? Bush s’inscrit dans
la pensée apocalyptique et messianique des militants Evangéliques Chrétiens,
et si on ajoute à cela le zèle militariste, cela peut devenir très dangereux
pour la démocratie !
COMMENTARY
As the journalists says, Bush is not the first President to speak of God or in the name of God and to be convinced that “The US is under the wing of providence”. But the religious rhetoric was never used at this point, and especially in a democracy. When the name of God becomes a kind of justification to wage war...we are sent back to the middle age. Our religious beliefs may help us to succeed in politic and even inspire our policies. Each one of our western democratic principles are based, in a way, on the Bible. Not to kill. Not to rape. Not to steal. But when each political decision is wrapped up in fondamentalist convictions, there is no democracy anymore. When you are a President and you feel divinely inspired it can be either marvelous or disastrous. There is no limit to do a lot of good...and a lot of bad. Choose.

The report was commissioned by influential Pentagon defence adviser
Andrew Marshall, who has held considerable sway on US military thinking over
the past three decades. He was the man behind a sweeping recent review aimed at
transforming the American military under Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
Senior climatologists believe that their verdicts could prove the
catalyst in forcing Bush to accept climate change as a real and happening
phenomenon. They also hope it will convince the United States to sign up to
global treaties to reduce the rate of climatic change. So as many scientists
said, this alarming report looks like a script of science fiction (to frighten
the politicians because they won’t shift!) rather than a scientific
scenario. But who knows?

SUMMARY
This report by Peter Schwarz and Doug Randall is the plausible and terrible scenario of...the apocalypse! Indeed it predicts that climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters.
This
report warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as
Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict,
mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world! The
document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge
of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling
food, water and energy supplies.
Could
this really happen? Yes, according to the report. And therefore it would
challenge United States national security in ways that should be considered
immediately. The US will need to take urgent action to prevent some of the most
significant impacts such as the risk of conflicts. The authors of this report
give some recommandations among them improving predictive climate models,
assembling comprehensive predictive models of climate change impacts or
creating vulnerability metrics.
Despite their support to this report, the scientists
consider that this scenario is probably exagerated. However, they agree to say
that the climate change is a reality.

scénario de…l’apocalypse ! En effet, il prévoit que le changement
climatique sur les 20 prochaines années pourrait provoquer une catastrophe
mondiale coûtant la vie de millions de personnes dans des guerres et des
catastrophes naturelles.
Ce rapport nous
prévient que les principales villes européennes sombreront sous les eaux
montants tandis que l’Angleterre sera plongée dans un climat
« sibérien » autour de 2020. Conflit nucléaire, « méga »
sécheresse, famine et émeutes partout …éclateront partout à travers le
monde ! Le document prévoit que le brutal changement climatique pourrait
ramener la planète aux bancs de l’anarchie tandis que les pays développent une
menace nucléaire afin de défendre et sécuriser une nourriture, des réserves en
énergie et en eau qui s’amenuisent.
Cela pourrait-il réellement se produire? Oui, selon le rapport. Et c’est
pourquoi cela pourrait lancer un challenge à la sécurité nationale des Etats
Unis selon des modalités qui devraient immédiatement être prises en
considérations. Les Etats Unis auront besoin de prendre des mesures urgentes
pour empêcher quelques uns des impacts les plus importants comme le risque de
conflits. Les auteurs de ce rapport donnent quelques recommandations parmi
lesquelles : améliorer les modèles de prédictions climatique, rassembler
des modèles de prédiction climatique permettant la compréhension des impacts ou
créer des systèmes de métriques de vulnérabilité.
En dépit de leur soutien à ce rapport, les scientifiques
considèrent que ce scénario est probablement exagéré. Pourtant, ils sont
d’accord pour dire que le changement climatique est une réalité.

Well...let say he is totally insane! He created a Web Site called “Bible Light”
and this site is full of references from ...try to guess....from the Bible!
Yes! And whatever you may think about it, it is undeniable that he worked hard
on it. He answers a few bruning question such as: Who was Jesus Christ and why
did He have to die, did He know the hour of His second coming?etc...etc...You
will find on his site a thousand links (for example to the Vatican sites or
catholic documents) and a thousand information. Keep cool and try to
concentrate. Because his Web page “666 the number of the Beast” is probably the
most disturbing page in this site. Just
for a few minutes, don’t be sceptic anymore and try to imagine that some of these
information are not stupid neither wrong...brrrrr....

SUMMARY
The Gematry is an ancient tradition of numerology which
has been developed especially by Jewish cabalists. It is an art of more or less
creative associations of series of numbers with specific words. For example,
the known number 666 has been associated with the image of beast or the
evil. This site offers a very detailed analyse of what this mystic number
refers to. It points out the importance of his signification through history
and especially the way it was manipulated to justify the apocalyptic beliefs in
the Anti Christ. Consequently it makes us wonder wether the enigma of the 666
is relevant or not.
We learn that the relationship of 666 with Greek, Latin, and Hebrew
may be an important indicator that the Papacy is the Antichrist and the beast
of Revelation. In fact the Papal title of VICAR OF THE CHRIST means a SUBSTITUTE
FOR CHRIST, which is synonymous with Antichrist! The author quotes many
sources tending to prove that the Pope litteraly substitutes himself in place
of God on earth, and that is exactly the meaning of Antichrist. Besides 666 is
the numerical equivalent of the latin words of the Pope’s title. And at the
time it –-the title--was inscribed upon the pope’s crown, for example on John
XXIII’s tiara. Disturbing, isn’t? Many texts and pictures tend to prove it, contrary to the people
arguing that the title “Vicarius Filii Dei” is a protestant invention.
The irrefutable proof would be the Donation of Constantine. It was held
by the Roman Catholic Church more than 600 years ago, and it is supposed to be
a valid document containing this much discussed title!
666 is also a number associated with pagan sun-worship, and consequently there would be a link between ancient babylonian cults and the Papacy of the Roman Catholic Church, which would be dominated by pagan practices and solar images, and referred to as Babylon in the book of Revelation.
Many interpretaters of The Apocalypse spent a considerable time in trying to determine the personality of the beast, and the preterists referred it to Nero Caesar. Indeed when they converted the letters into the numerals Hebrew system, the number 666 was obtained. But according to our analyst, his name was turned and twisted till these people could get the magic number. Moreover, the papal title is not the NAME of the Pope! So those interpretations are sometimes absurd. Therefore they appear like desparate attemps to find a so-called Anti Christ which probably doesn’t exist... And perhaps if you try with your name you will discover that YOU are the beast of Apocalypse too!

666 est également un chiffre associé à des cultes paganistes du soleil
et il y aurait par conséquent un lien entre les anciens cultes babyloniens et
la papauté de l’Eglise Catholique Romaine, qui serait dominée par des pratiques
paganistes et des images du soleil et s’est référée à Babylonne dans le livre
de l’Apocalypse.
De nombreux interprètes de l’Apocalypse passèrent un temps considérable à
essayer de déterminer la personnalité de la bête, et les prétéristes

selon notre analyste, son nom fut tourné et retourné jusqu’à ce que ces gens
puissent enfin obtenir le chiffre magique. En outre, le titre papal n’est pas
le NOM du Pape ! Donc ces interprétations sont quelques fois absurdes.
C’est pourquoi elles apparaissent comme des tentatives désespérées pour trouver
un soit- disant Antéchrist qui n’existe probablement pas. Et peut être que si

However, this site is not that foolish. It shows that some people work hard on the Bible and try to analyse it in a “scientific” way. Their reasonning is not that silly. Of course we can deny their work and say that they’re trying to find a reason whereas there is NO REASON. Of course we can say : “this sucks”. But it wouldn’t be honnest. I am sure all of us, at least once in our life, have had this mysterious feeling that some coincidences are more than coincidences. And even if this Web site is extreme (you can also have a look on the french site http://gematrie.online.fr/666.htm which is much more excessive!) it reveals our human worries or obsessions: the eternal will to understand who we are. The need to make sense of this life !

The end of my Web Review. Together we saw that millenarism is not necessarily
tied to specific dates, although certain dates have the power to stimulate
religious imaginations. 666, 1999, 2000...these magic numbers entail belief in
an imminent transition to a collective salvation which can be earthly or
heavenly or both.
Some
religious millennialists are terrorists but most of them rely on conversion,
faith, and worship to create God’s kingdom. Many believers await God’s
intervention to destroy and/or transform the world as we know it. Many are
those who believe that they work to improve society according to God’s plan.
Think of Bush. And curiously, more than any other country in the world, America
as a nation tends to have a peculiar view of religion. It often claims to have
a special relationship with God, apparently convinced that He has personally
chosen and blessed the USA over and above all other nations. Fortunately, even
many Americans do not support this notion.
I would like to conclude with two specific groups I intentionally left
out in my work: first, the secular millennialists such as Communists, who do
not believe in a spiritual world, focus on building the perfect society on
Earth. And secondly, I know that I also completely left out the Islamic thoughts
and traditions on this matter. If I was a Muslim American and I read this
review, I would have probably thought that this work is biased and only puts
fortward the ideas of Christianism and Judaïsm. The Islamic thoughts could have
enriched this review. And it would have also shown how closely Islam is aligned
with Christianity and Judiasm. Yes, I know. But ... We don’t have plenty of
time...before THE END....

“F”, mais une plus petite. La fin de ma revue Internet. Nous avons vu ensemble
que le millénarisme n’est pas nécessairement lié à des dates spécifiques, même
si certaines dates ont le pouvoir de stimuler les imaginations religieuses.
666, 1999, 2000…ces chiffres magiques entraînent la croyance en une imminente
transition vers un salut collectif qui peut être terrestre ou paradisiaque
voire les deux.
Certains millénaristes religieux sont des terroristes
mais la plupart d’entre eux comptent sur la conversion, la foi, et le culte pour créer le royaume de Dieu. De
nombreux croyants attendent l’intervention de Dieu pour détruire et/ou
transformer le monde tel que nous le connaissons. Nombreux sont ceux qui croient
travailler à l’amélioration de la société selon un plan divin. Pensez à Bush.
Et curieusement, plus que n’importe quel autre pays dans le monde, l’Amérique
en tant que nation tend à avoir une vision de la religion toute particulière.
Elle clame souvent avoir une relation spéciale avec Dieu, apparemment
convaincue qu’Il a personnellement choisi et béni les Etats Unis au dessus et
par dessus toute autre nation . Heureusement, il y a aussi beaucoup
d’américains qui ne soutiennent pas cette notion.
Je souhaiterais conclure avec deux
groupes spécifiques que j’ai intentionnellement mis de côté dans mon
travail : premièrement, les millénaristes séculaires comme les
communistes, qui ne croient pas en un monde spirituel, se concentrent sur la
construction d’une société parfaite sur terre. Et deuxièmement, je sais que
j’ai aussi complètement mis de côté les pensées et traditions islamiques sur le
sujet. Si j’étais une musulmane américaine et que j’avais lu cette revue,
j’aurais probablement pensé que ce travail est biaisé et qu’il met uniquement
en avant les idées issues du Christianisme et du Judaïsme. Ces pensées
islamiques auraient pu enrichir cette revue. Et cela aurait aussi montré à quel
point l’Islam peut s’aligner sur ces deux religions. Oui, je sais. Mais…nous
n’avons plus beaucoup de temps…avant LA FIN….
