The Ceremony of the Oscars |
by Hélène Gomis
Why did you choose this subject?
The Oscars Ceremony is the greatest venue of cinema. It awards the best film and the best actors, directors and even the incidental music.
It’s a great homage for cinema. But this ceremony is a show to sell not only movies but spangles and nothing else. If it ‘s the opportunity to congregate the world of cinema. Its aim is only marketing, what a shame.
CONTEXT
In 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, to publicly award the best achievements for the year, held the very first Oscar Awards Ceremony. The now well-known golden statuette was reputedly given its name after a secretary from the Academy said it "looks just like my Uncle Oscar!".
From this date on, every year the Oscars ceremony has been set in Hollywood. The best movies are in competition for the Oscar. The award is a recognition of talent from the world of cinema. The cinema began in Hollywood. Initially, cinema was silent with great actors like Charlie Chaplin.

What do these two chosen articles discuss ?
These articles discuss the 78th academy award. The winner, for the category of best movie was Brokeback Mountain. It’s features two cowboys who fall in love. Ang Lee won best director for Brokeback Mountain but the film won only three of the eight awards it was nominated for. Reese Witherspoon and Philip Seymour Hoffman was awarded for their roles in Walk the Line and Capote, in the category of the best actors. These years seem preoccupied with political and moral subjects. George Clooney won the best supporting actor award for his performance in "Syriana" as a C.I.A agent caught between terrorists and his corrupt bosses. The French were the winners for the best documentary feature with the March of Penguins
MY OPINION
Every years it is the same thing, with the same winners, the same ceremony. In recent years, it was a great surprise when Jimmy Fox was awarded for his performance in Ray. It was the first time than a black American has received an Oscar in this category. This is the proof that mentalities have changed. But this year, this type of surprise was nowhere in evidence. For me, this ceremony doesn’t represent the cinema. There was no award for Art films by authors. Only, smash hits with a huge-budget have been introduced into this ceremony. I am forgetting the big surprise for the French : the March of the Penguins won the best documentary. But the documentary outlined at Hollywood wasn’t the as the one outlined in French. In fact the Americans changed the incidental music as if Emilie Simon’s music belonged to the film. For me, the documentary lost it sense. The movies, in competition, had little promotion in France. We can discuss the business of Hollywood because the ceremony was originally a marketing venue.
