Voodoo, Vodun, Hoodoo, Cuban Santeria, Macumba, Umbanda, Candomble, Lucumi, Yorumba.. All those names, more or less famous, have a common point: they all refer to impenetrable, mysterious practices. But among them, the Voodoo is probably the most famous in western countries: it conveys the fancy of people dancing in trances, wallowing in the mud, possessed by some evil spirit, or doing black magic with voodoo dolls and zombies…. But beyond these received ideas, the Voodoo appears to be an interesting culture and a very practical religion, which is an integral part of the life for millions of people around the world. That’s why we can’t approach the voodoo without dealing with those 3 complementary dimensions: a definition, a concrete illustration, and an overview of a few clichés about the Voodoo.
